Quarterback Blitz
Alexandria Griffins, Book 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb

All Anna James wants for her fortieth birthday is a ladies’ night out, her plans stalled when she ends up stuck in her griffin costume. As the mascot for the Alexandria Griffins, she never expects to be rescued by the star of her midnight fantasies, quarterback Kyran Black. Dubbed “The Rebel” by the press because of his long hair, tattoos, and playboy stats off the field, he’s everything she should avoid…but still craves and Anna agrees to celebrate her birthday with him.

Certain she’s too old for him, she intends to guard her heart, but he blitzes her defenses, proving to be so much more than a legendary athlete with a media-driven reputation. But when their romantic weekend evolves into love, a blast from his bad boy past returns with a vengeance, threatening to tear their worlds apart.

Can their love overcome the pressures of living in the spotlight, or will they lose the future they’ve only begun to build?

Excerpt

Checking his phone, he noticed a text from Dallas letting him know the coast was clear. Good, one less thing to worry about. Sending a text asking his friend to bring his duffel bag to the hallway outside the women’s locker room, he hoped he wouldn’t need to go into an explanation. When he got an okay emoji in response, he relaxed and put the phone next to Anna’s purse.
He’d just withdrawn his hand when a terrible scream sent him running toward the shower room that wasn’t much different than the men’s.
“Anna,” he called out over the sound of water, steam flooding the whole room, her yips and yelps making his heart race like a jackrabbit. Sliding to a halt when he reached the last stall, he slid open the curtain only to panic when he realized he couldn’t even see her.
“No, don’t come in here. It’s too hot and I can’t reach the faucet to shut off the water.”
“Fuck that,” he growled, charging forward, the water pelting his shoulders making him hiss. “Shit!”
At last, he found the knob, requiring three turns before the water shut off. Waving at the steam, he found Anna sitting in the corner of the stall, hugging herself, her head bowed, the skin on her shoulders bright pink. Hating to see her that way, he sat down next to her, his back against the wall, his knees bent.
“Go home, Kyran, I’m sure you’ve a thousand things to do after a game.” “The only thing I need to take care of right now is you,” he assured, meaning it. “Can I get you anything, first aid cream, aloe? I’m an excellent masseuse.”
“That’s kind of you, but unnecessary. It was weird, you know? The warm water suddenly went cold and when I tried to turn the knob, it became way too hot and I panicked. I’m sorry to have frightened you.”
“That is weird and I’m going to take it up with stadium management ASAP. That should not happen, Anna.”
“You can’t do that.”
“Why not?”
“Because they’ll ask how you knew about the hot water mix up.”“Trust me, I can inform them of the fault in the plumbing without bringing your name into it. I sure as hell can’t let anyone else use this shower until it’s been checked. Come on, let me see if you’ve been burned.”
“Um, I’m naked.”
“That’s okay, most people take showers without clothes on.” “And, there’s still shampoo in my hair. This was the last straw in a day from hell and all I want is to curl up in bed, watch a movie that’ll make me cry, and eat a gallon of rocky road ice cream,” she grumbled, her panicked breaths muffled when she dropped her head onto her forearm and cried.
“Don’t cry. Please don’t, that’ll kill me,” he urged, getting nowhere. Didn’t matter that his ass was sitting in water that was still too hot for comfort. All he could do was turn to her, take her elbow and tug, next thing he knew, she’d crawled onto his lap, snuggling up against him. God have mercy, she was the sweetest thing he’d ever known, felt. His need for her more than physical, it was down deep, refusing to let him so much as look at another woman since they’d met.

AUTHOR BIO

My love for storytelling began when I created my first fictional characters in kindergarten, convincing my family and friends that Red Henry and Green Henry were identical twin brothers in my school. They were mischievous, rarely did their homework, and even had girlfriends! Years later, I started to write, completing my first manuscript in middle school. I confess the heroine was a cross between a contemporary Laura Ingalls Wilder and Nancy Drew, who’d been dating one of the Hardy Boys, but when I wrote “the end” I’d known I had more stories to tell.

Guest post: Seneca Lake by Emily Heebner

Today my guest is Emily Heebner and she's is talking about her newest release Seneca Lake

Tell us a little about yourself.

Emily Heebner is a fiction writer, university lecturer and theatre professional. A graduate of  Cornell University, she worked extensively as an actor for many years, then wrote documentary scripts for such dvds as "The Hours," "Tuck Everlasting," "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Passion of the Christ." Her YA novel Seneca Lake was inspired by her mother's growing up in the rural Finger Lakes during WWII. When they aren't teaching, she and her film professor husband live on top of a mountain with their adopted dog and two cats.

What do like the most and the least about writing?

What I love about writing is the research process as well as the creativity that happens as I type. Once in the zone, writing appears that I didn't anticipate! I love revising, too. After getting a scene going on the page, I enjoy taking a walk, making a cup o' tea, then sitting back down to fiddle around with the text. Computers make that so easy! I remember the days of typewriters and carbon paper, so I appreciate the freedom to move text around, to park early drafts until I really trust that the new writing is better, such a luxury. I often check early drafts and discover a few gems that are worth slipping back in. Sharing the development of work with other writers, especially in a trusted critique group, is so helpful and fun because it's social!

The down side of writing is sitting in a chair for too long. Also, it can get to be quite solitary.

Give us a peek into your latest published work?

It's 1944, and high school senior Meg Michaels has always obeyed her grandparents' wishes, till now. They're urging her to give up her dream of Cornell University and accept a ring from wealthy Hank Wickham before he deploys overseas. But Meg has studied hard and yearns for something better than life in the rural Finger Lakes. Plus Meg's suddenly fascinated with her childhood friend, Arthur Young, a handsome Seneca Indian farm worker. When Meg and Arthur nurse a sick puppy to health, their friendship transforms into love. But locals look down on "injuns" and resent the fact that Arthur's farm job exempts him from military duty. While the war rages in Europe, Meg and Arthur must fight their own battles at home…

What’s next on the writing horizon for you?

I'm finishing a new adult novella. And I'd like to write the sequel to Seneca Lake.

Is there anything you want to tell readers?

The story is fiction but takes place in real locations that will seem familiar to those who know the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. As I said, I based the heroine on my mother who died early so writing the book was a way for me to spend time with her in my imagination.  The hero is a Seneca Indian farm worker and readers may be interested to learn about the prejudice against Native Americans during WWII. Seneca Lake itself is named after the people who were the keepers of the Iroquois nation's "Western Door" before Washington's army forced them to relocate. The area was also the birthplace of the women's movement and a stop on the Underground Railroad. There are numerous colleges and universities in the area, including Cornell University where my mom was a student. The Finger Lakes region is a scenic vacation spot with wineries, restaurants and historic homes, now bed and breakfasts. We recently stayed at one called The Fox and Grapes - fabulous!
Please include an excerpt to your book here:

When she looked up, Arthur stood close by, watching her, buttoning his shirt over his overalls. She blushed. Neither of them spoke.

They wandered among the trees toward home. White butterflies danced above the wild strawberries where the bees had been and the scent of skunk still lingered.

“You shouldn’t come out here alone,” Arthur said. “You can’t be sure what you might see.”

“Maybe you ought to wear a bathing suit.” She glanced at him but he watched the path ahead. He didn’t care that she’d seen him without his clothes on, she knew that.

“Where’d you get the welts?”

“Fell. Wrestling Ol’ Pete.”

He gently took her hand. Crickets chirruped.

Sunlight brightened the woods’ canopy as they neared the Lees’ property line. He paused.

“I’ll wait a while,” he said, letting go of her hand. “You leave first.”

She looked up. Why after so many years of thinking of him as a brother, as a pesky brother even, why suddenly did she feel so differently standing near him? She knew Gram was waiting. But she suddenly loathed the Wickhams and she couldn’t tell anyone why.

She touched a top button on his shirt. His chest rose and fell with soft breaths. She tucked a strand of wet hair behind his ear. Their foreheads pressed together, his hair falling forward around their faces. Their noses touched. Then their lips. She dangled her arms at her sides so she wouldn’t bump his sores.

Uncomfortable Truths About Sales

I know my blog has been pretty much dead for the last little while. I’m sorry for that and I’m going to work on doing better. Life has a way of getting in the way, but not only that but I tend to focus on writing and forget everything else.

It was brought home to me a couple of weeks ago there’s a lot more than just writing the book, especially when it come to sales.

I knew this and I have done some promotion/marketing in the past but not heavily and with some books hardly at all because I had too much going on. But because the idea was brought front and center to me I decided I needed to see exactly why sales started declining.

In order to do this, it meant pulling all my sales reports and analyzing them. There’s a reason I haven’t done this before, because I get obsessed with numbers. Deep in my heart, I’m a numbers person, I love seeing them and figuring things out. Not a bad thing, but I will do this and forget everything thing else. I have that kind of personality.

But I did it. I went through all my sales for both my publishers, for all my books, as well as the little bit of self-publishing I’ve done. The results were good and bad.

The good:

The numbers weren’t as bad as I thought. I’m still selling, and people are still discovering me. I can see some areas when I did some promotions or sales of books my numbers jumped and sales went up. All good things.

I have a following, I can see it with the first month of release, so again good news.

The bad:

I need to do better.

I need to build that following.

The loss of independent e-book retailers.

Finding the right balance

I saw the decline in numbers when Amazon opened their publishing to all authors and some romance authors discovered it, again when KU came into play. Sales numbers dropped dramatically, but along with this was the loss of what I call independent booksellers: Fictionwise, All Romance e-books, and others (like Sony).

Those sites were selling my books, I had readers who bought from those sites. When those sites closed shop, sales dropped. All of this happened when self-publishing, mainly through Amazon picked up steam and authors were flocking over there.

There was another dip when KU came on board with KDP Select.

Where did the readers go? Because they didn’t all flock to a kindle device. I have no idea. With those retailers gone, sales seemed to drop off a cliff. If those readers switched devices the sales would still be there. So did they stop reading? Maybe some enrolled in KU because it was cheaper?

Of course the economy hasn’t been the best either, and people don’t have the extra to buy books, even e-books.

The other thing could also be self-published authors (and I’m one) putting books out for so little money has now devalued the cost of a book, and people won’t pay the higher prices.

I work at keeping my prices reasonable, but I'm not going to charge someone $$$ for a short story or a novelette.

I don’t have any answers. I don’t agree with some of the publishers pricing of books, because they are too high and it does make it hard for readers.

But devaluing our work isn’t the answer either.

The readers are out there, somewhere, it’s getting our books in front of them that is hard.

Finding the balance is not going to be an easy thing either, but its something we as authors have to make the decision on. I can't do everything, so I will do what I can and go with it. I will keep trying to build my reader base as best as I can.

As an authors, I believe the best thing for us to do is to write the best book we can, make sure it's edited, our covers look good, and when the book is released get the word out. And then we start on the next book, because you're best promotional tool is your next book.

Guest Post - Sadira Stone - New Release - Runaway Love Story

I please to have my good friend, Sadira Stone on my blog today to talk about her new release: Runaway Love Story

Blurb:

High school history teacher Doug Garvey is trying to enjoy his last few weeks of summer vacation, but receiving his final divorce decree hits him harder than expected. After a brief fling fizzles, he fears love just isn't in the cards for him. If only he could find someone who's real, someone interested in something beyond herself…maybe a new running partner who can keep up with his more carnal appetite. When sexy, straight-talking Laurel runs across his path, he dares to hope again.

He's done with social-climbing posers...she's ambitious and has big dreams.

Fired from an art gallery, Laurel Jepsen shelves her pursuit of an art career in San Francisco to help her beloved great aunt Maxie move into assisted living. While out on a morning run, she's harassed by a group of teens until a tall, broad-shouldered hottie steps in, pretending to be her boyfriend with a kiss that makes her wish it were true. But she's only passing through, not looking for a relationship.

Their fierce chemistry burns up the sheets—and the couch, the shower, the forest—but falling in love would ruin everything. Laurel can't stay in Eugene, and he can't leave. Doug's only hope is to convince her the glittery life she's after could blind her to the opportunities already in her path.

Excerpt:

“I’m sorry she called you the S word.”

                “Huh?”

                “Sensible.”

She laughed. “Yeah. That’s a curse word, as far as I’m concerned.” She leaned her head on his shoulder.

“I’ll strike it from my vocabulary. Your S word is sparkle.” He traced her jawline with a feather-light touch. “Look at you, Laurel. You’re blinding.” His twilight-blue gaze made her heart dance—a steamy tango with swirls and dangerous dips. He kissed her, and, for a moment, she forgot all about caution, about cutting things off before they became too serious, about San Francisco. Her focus narrowed to his lips on hers, his nearness heating her whole body, opening her like a blossom, soft and willing. Ripe for the plucking.

“God, I’ve missed you.” He scooped her legs across his lap. One hand cradling her nape, the other gripping her thigh, he kissed her senseless. His velvet tongue teased her lips apart. He tasted of sugary coffee. The world around them faded—just two bodies, calling and answering, breathing in sync, their pulses beating the same rhythm.

I have never had so much fun with a writing project! My first steamy romance, Through the Red Door, nearly wrote itself, though it damned sure didn't edit itself. I've totally immersed myself in the world of romance, gobbling books like popcorn, filling my ears with romance podcasts, and joining the Romance Writers of America. From skeptic to romance mega-fan in two short years, I’m totally addicted to passionate, heartfelt stories with happy endings.

Why set the series in a bookshop? Ever since I was a wee lass, I dreamed of owning one. Add to that my fascination with historical erotic art and literature, and you’ve got the Book Nirvana series, set in an indie bookshop with an extensive erotica collection behind a locked red door.

I love stories in which a couple’s powerful physical attraction leads them to consider a partner outside their usual M.O.—one who just might turn out to be their perfect match. That’s how it happened for my husband and me, and my romance fiction contains that element.

I sort of pulled the setting out of a hat. I wanted to set my series in a college town. I’d heard that Eugene, home of the University of Oregon, has a lively arts scene and a rich counterculture legacy from the hippie era. After much online research, correspondence, and hours on Google Earth, I finally made the trip. Eugene is even lovelier than I’d imagined. Kate Rock, a resident author, kindly shared her knowledge of the city’s history and the flavor of the different neighborhoods. I look forward to many return trips.

Part 1 - Tainted:

A jealous, malevolent wife hooked on prescription drugs, a husband caught between reality and carnal fantasies, and an angel cast from heaven, are all bound together by their hatred for one woman whose spells and manifestations catch them in a downward spiral towards hell...Gina Faulkner, thought to be a voodoo queen, owner of Swamp Witch Pickles in New Orleans, is the center of it all.

Bane Colton, dangerous and cocky, sees Gina at the French Market and the game is on. He makes up his mind he's going to break the feisty redhead with the infamous kinky reputation, body and soul. And Gina's ready to be a player, until Bane’s estranged and demented wife, Beverly, wants him back.

Enter enigmatic Darsh, known to many as the Angel of Death, who’s watched over Gina since she was fifteen and has loved her almost as much as he’s hated her. Now they would come face to face. He could save her from certain peril, but could never save her from herself. Would she destroy them all? At the very least, a shift in the universe was coming.

Excerpt:
“I had a love once that I never got over. I still dream about him, think of him, wonder if I’ll see him in heaven. No, it wasn’t your grandfather, Ian. I did love him. But sometimes there’s one person your soul meshes with so completely that you don’t care if you ever have sex because it’s worth a lifetime just to see them once in a while.” His grandmother looked off as if she were seeing someone in the distance. “Can you understand what I’m saying?” She turned back to him, her gaze penetrating.
“No,” he lied as tears stung the backs of his eyes.
“Sometimes, you love someone so much you almost hate them for it, for to hate someone you have to be capable of loving them. Who is it that you just lied about? Who is it that you hate?”
“No one, Grandmother…no one.”
“I’ve always felt sad for you, Ian, never having known what it’s like to be in love. But I see it in your eyes. You know what it’s like to be in hate.”
Darsh stood, walked to her, bent, and kissed her cheek. “No one is worthy of my hate,” he whispered.
“If you saw her today, the woman unworthy of your hate, what would you feel for her?” the old woman asked knowingly.
“Extreme dislike,” he answered, his eyes narrowing. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do before dinner.”
Darsh turned down the hallway towards the library. My world’s crumbling…I can’t keep going like this.. He ran his hands through his hair. It’s all finally catching up to me and soon nothing will be the same. A shift in the universe is coming and Gina Faulkner’s bound to be at the heart of it.

Someone Like Me by Stephanie Fournet
Genre: New Adult

Blurb
Drew Moroux has spent the last eight years in Angola State Pen, and if it were up to him, he’d rot there. He’ll never be able to make up for what he’s done, but when he finds himself on the outside, Drew has to keep it together for the two people in his family who still believe in him. But holding it together means working, taking care of his grandmother, and keeping his nose clean. Not spending time with the girl next door. She’s way too good for someone like him.

Evie Lalonde is great at bending over backwards — on a yoga mat and for other people. Of course, that would be easier if her family approved of her job choice. Or her values. Or the way she sees the world. They definitely don’t approve of Drew Moroux. But Evie knows the tortured auto mechanic with the gray eyes and rough hands needs a friend more than anything — even if he keeps pushing her away. Still, when she’s with him, friendship is the last thing on her mind. Falling for free-spirited Evie might be the best thing Drew’s ever done, but it could cost him more than his heart.

Excerpt:
He cleared his throat, breaking into her thoughts, the sound barreling around them on the empty street.
“Well.” He buried his hands deeper into his jacket pockets. “I can see for myself you’re fine. You’ve had a full day, so I’ll let you get on home. Thanks again for the great lesson this morning. And for keeping me company while you worked.”
“It was nice to have someone to talk with, so in reality, I should be thanking you. And for seeing that I was safe.”
She wasn’t sure why, but when his cheeks darkened and his chin and gaze dropped down again at her words, she was utterly enchanted.
Without thinking why she shouldn’t, Hope stretched up, intending to kiss his cheek. At the moment right before her lips touched his skin, Tyler lifted his head and turned toward her. The kiss meant for his face landed squarely across his lips instead.
They both went stone still at the contact.
She’d put no heat behind the kiss. After all, it wasn’t as if she were kissing a man she was involved with. No, she’d simply planned it as a sweet way to thank him for being so kind and solicitous toward her, as she would to anyone she considered a friend.
Why, then, didn’t this feel like a chaste kiss between friends?
Why, then, did she feel as if she’d been dropped into a spewing volcano?
And why, then, did the thought of breaking the kiss leave her cold and lonely?
Tyler kept his hands in his pockets, never moving closer, and yet she felt enveloped by him as if he’d wound her into his arms and pulled her against his body. He let out a deep, long breath, the warm air drifting over her face and sending little tingles of...something...straight down her spine. Anticipation? Expectation? Desire? She had no clue, but Hope felt more alive and more aware than she had in years.
A tiny gasp pushed from deep within her when Tyler shifted his head, changing the angle of the kiss.
His lips parted, the taste of hops and barley riding on his breath as she breathed him in. He kept the kiss light, never pushing her into more, giving her all the control of where it went.
Hope had no idea how long they stood there under the bright streetlamp on the empty corner. It could have been a minute. It could have been an hour. The notion briefly blew through her mind that they were out in the open in a town where everyone knew her and liked nothing more to do on long winter nights than gossip. As quick as it came, the knowledge that she didn’t care a whit countered it.

Peggy Jaeger is a contemporary romance writer who writes about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them.

Family and food play huge roles in Peggy’s stories because she believes there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal…or two…or ten. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, Peggy brings all topics of daily life into her stories: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after. Growing up the only child of divorced parents she longed for sisters, brothers and a family that vowed to stick together no matter what came their way. Through her books, she has created the families she wanted as that lonely child.

Tying into her love of families, her children's book, THE KINDNESS TALES, was illustrated by her artist mother-in-law.

Peggy holds a master's degree in Nursing Administration and first found publication with several articles she authored on Alzheimer's Disease during her time running an Alzheimer's in-patient care unit during the 1990s.

In 2013, she placed first in two categories in the Dixie Kane Memorial Contest: Single Title Contemporary Romance and Short/Long Contemporary Romance.

In 2017 she came in 3rd in the New England Reader's Choice contest for A KISS UNDER THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS and was a finalist in the 2017 STILETTO contest for the same title.

In 2018, Peggy was a finalist in the HOLT MEDALLION Award and once again in the 2018 Stiletto Contest.
